Samsung sh100 14mp touch screen wifi digital camera reviews

The auto white balance is good, which is important since this camera really is all about automatic shooting. If you do want more say in the end result, in the Program mode you have access to manual white balance and custom RGB sliders as well as sharpness, saturation, and contrast sliders. There's a slight amount of barrel distortion at the wide end of the lens and barely perceptible pincushioning with the lens extended.

More importantly, the lens on my review camera was inconsistent with some softness off to the sides, particularly the left side. Center sharpness was OK, though. Video quality is on par with a basic HD pocket video camera; good enough for Web use and casual TV viewing. Panning the camera will create judder that's typical of the video from most compact cameras and you will see ghosting with fast-moving subjects.

The zoom lens does function while recording, though the audio cuts out slightly while the lens is moving. Image stabilization is digital only. If you really like playing with filters and other shooting effects with your smartphone, the SH is definitely the camera for you. While it has regular point-and-shoot auto modes, it also has a lot of other automatic shooting options beyond simple scene modes. What's nice is that you can use them both before you shoot or apply them after with a built-in editor.

While you don't have complete control over shutter speed and aperture, there is a Night mode that lets you select shutter speeds from 1 second up to 16 seconds and pick from two apertures though one is achieved with a neutral density filter. Also, the camera's Program mode has more control than you usually get at this price. Shooting performance is a bit mixed.

The SH's shutter lag is low for its class at 0. However, it's somewhat slow to start up and shoot, averaging about 2. Shot-to-shot time is almost as long at 1. Its continuous shooting speed averages 0.

While these times aren't horrible, they will make taking photos of active kids and pets trickier. You'll get a shot, but it might not be the shot you were after. Samsung wisely kept the SH very small and light. If you're already leaving your camera at home in favor of your smartphone's camera, you probably wouldn't be interested in something that's bulky and heavy unless it had a significantly longer lens.

With its 3-inch touch screen used for most of the controls, it slips easily into a small bag or pants pocket. The Samsung SH's 5x zoom lens offers a versatile focal range, as illustrated by these examples:. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft and ideally benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level. The Samsung SH handled chromatic aberrations fairly well during the review, with some purple fringing present around the edges of objects in high-contrast situations, as shown in the examples below.

The Samsung SH offers a Macro setting that allows you to focus on a subject that is 5cms away from the camera when the lens is set to wide-angle. The first image shows how close you can get to the subject in this case a compact flash card. These shots of a white coloured wall were taken at a distance of 1. And here are some portrait shots. As you can see, neither the Auto setting or the Red eye fix option caused any red-eye. The Samsung SH's maximum shutter speed is 8 seconds in the Night scene mode, which is good news if you're seriously interested in night photography.

The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 6 seconds at ISO The thumbnails below link to the full-sized versions, which have not been altered in any way. Download Original. This is a sample video from the Samsung SH camera at the highest quality setting of x pixels at 30 frames per second. Please note that this 25 second movie is A compact camera with built-in Wi-Fi, whilst perhaps not an over-riding consideration for the average happy snapper at the point of purchase, certainly has its uses and moreover in the case of the SH actually works, and works simply.

OK, it's not the only option for sharing photos, but more methods rather than fewer is always welcome. Plus, as we noted at the start of this review, with the SH Samsung is targeting the smartphone generation, so it makes sense that it showcases a similar interface and operability. Strip away such gimmicky and, yes, this is your average 'auto everything' point and shoot pocket camera. But as it retails for a price that matches your regular snapshot - and so said gimmickry can be viewed as an 'extra' rather than commanding a premium in itself - the SH suggests excellent value and obvious appeal to the tech-savvy teen.

Retrieving and replacing the fiddly microSD card is a pain however, and we were in constant fear of misplacing it on a busy desktop, so loses the SH a star from our rating. In targeting a youth audience you can see why Samsung has adopted it however - phone users might conceivably have a stash of microSD cards already. However, there's more to the SH than meets the eye, as long as you don't want to shoot in low light without flash to any great extent it delivers a reliable performance and is priced reasonably too.

All things considered one could do far, far worse if looking for an auto everything point and shoot with a degree of versatility regards connectivity and future proofing built in. The Samsung SH offers some exciting wireless-sharing features, like tight integration with Samsung Android phones. But noisy images and a lack of optical image stabilization limit this pocket camera's appeal. Read the full review ». Latest Reviews Popular Reviews. Download the sample movie.

Perfect Portrait System. PC with processor better than PentiumIV 3. The big question though, is does the SH deliver on its promise? Is it the jack of all trades, or just the master of none? This is paired with a 5x optical zoom that offers a 26mm to mm zoom range, in 35mm terms. Sensitivity ranges from ISO 80 to , with the SH able to shoot continuously at a rather sloth-like 2fps when set to Continuous drive mode.

The default aspect ratio is , with a maximum output of x pixels at the full 14MP. This is easily enough for A3 sized posters, should you wish to print that large. With the SH being very much a fun and social camera, regular shooting modes are limited to Smart Auto, Scene and Program.

While all three are fully-automatic options in that the camera selects the appropriate shutter speed and aperture, Program mode does at least allow you some control over a range of basic settings like ISO and White Balance. In addition, the SH also features a generous range of digital filters to play around with.

These filters include things like miniaturisation, sketch, fisheye, vignetting, and soft focus, along with a couple of grainy old-film effects. In addition, there are also a couple of Simple shooting modes that allow you to set brightness, colour and depth-of-field using on-screen sliders.

HD Video can be recorded at a maximum resolution of x at 30fps. Locking onto a wireless network is a fairly painless process too, and can be done from individual images when in Playback mode, or from the Web icon on the home screen. The touch-screen QWERTY keyboard is a bit small and fiddly to use and the camera can be a bit slow to complete the connection process, but on the whole it does prove quite reliable. Once locked on there are all kinds of possibilities. You can choose to upload images directly to a Facebook, Picassa, YouTube, Photobucket or Samsung Imaging account, or you can email them directly from the camera using an existing email account.

If you really want to get clever you can even set the camera to connect with a compatible Samsung phone — the Galaxy S2 for example — and then use the phone as a remote viewing screen and shutter release. In any case, it does seem a somewhat laboured way of taking self- or group portraits. In the hand the SH feels small, light and pocket-friendly — the kind of camera you can carry just about anywhere. The 5x zoom sits almost flush when closed, extending little more than an inch at its maximum reach.

In a neat little touch the flat base of the camera is slightly angled, so that when rested on its side the camera points up ever so slightly, making self-portraits that little bit easier. Outer construction is primarily plastic, with a metal lens surround.

Being touch-screen operated, physical buttons are few and far between. No doubt this is a deliberate ploy to make the camera chime with its intended audience and it certainly does make it easy to navigate. In terms of performance the SH is very much in line with an average point and shoot.
